The CITB Approved 2 Day SMSTS Refresher course is delivered remotely via Zoom. The two-day SMSTS Refresher online training programme for anyone currently holding a valid Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate. It's a renewal qualification that updates your knowledge of your responsibilities for site safety, health, welfare and the environment. To maintain SMSTS certification, holders must refresh their skills and knowledge every five years through successfully passing an SMSTS Refresher course.

The SMSTS is a prerequisite qualification for site managers working on a UK construction site. The SMSTS Refresher online course enables site managers to maintain their SMSTS qualification when taken within 5 years of their original SMSTS course. Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher, or SMSTS Refresher online course, enables site managers to brush-up on their site safety and maintain their qualification. SMSTS is a qualification created by CITB to establish a clear industry-wide standard for the management of health and safety on construction sites, and is the Approved Code of Practice for construction regulations. It is considered to be a key requirement for anyone who wants to be a site manager.
SMSTS Refresher Online Course Agenda
This is a highly interactive course taught through case studies, classroom discussion, group work and individual or group presentations. You will need to do some self-study outside the course.

- Fire on construction sites including Fire Safety Order
- Construction waste and Site Waste Management
- Theory Test – A number of multiple choice and written questions, currently undertaken in Microsoft Forms to maintain the integrity/confidentiality of the exam process. Delegates must score 81% or more to pass.

Prerequisites
The 2-day SMSTS Refresher online course is only available to delegates who have previously passed the full 5 day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) CITB course. Delegates must be able to provide proof of their full SMSTS certificate to be eligible for the two-day SMSTS Refresher course. The delegates current SMSTS OR SMSTS Refresher certificate must not have expired or they will need to re-take the full five-day SMSTS course.
Mandatory Requirements
- A valid SMSTS certificate gained in the last five years. You must take this course before your certificate expires
- To be able to read, write and understand English to a good level. Please contact us if you have any concerns in this area
- You will need to provide a valid ID on the first day of the course, such as a copy of your passport or driving licence
- If you need to re-sit the test, you must do this within 90 days of the original course date at an additional charge
N.B. With RISK, you can re-sit the exam on the same day at no extra fee.
