Non-Licensed Asbestos Work (CAT B) in Sutton Coldfield

This Asbestos Category B Non-Licensed Work course runs at the Vesey House training centre in Sutton Coldfield, delivered by PGL Midlands.

Course Duration

One day, approximately six hours including the assessments.

Delivery Method

Classroom-based and tutor-led. This course cannot be taken online — the practical assessment has to be done in person.

Who Should Attend

  • Maintenance staff and building engineers
  • Construction and refurbishment workers
  • Demolition and soft strip teams
  • Electricians, plumbers, heating and ventilation engineers
  • Joiners, decorators, roofers and tilers
  • Facilities and property management teams

This goes beyond awareness. It is for people who may knowingly disturb lower-risk asbestos materials — removing asbestos cement products, cleaning up ACM debris, drilling textured coatings, or working on bitumen, floor tiles, gaskets and rope seals.

What You'll Learn

Theory

  • Asbestos types and where they are typically found
  • Health effects and routes of exposure
  • Legal duties under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
  • Telling non-licensed work apart from licensed work
  • Notifiable Non-Licensed Work (NNLW) and what it requires
  • Use of PPE and RPE, including face fit awareness
  • Decontamination procedures and waste handling
  • Emergency procedures following an exposure

Practical

  • Using RPE and PPE correctly
  • Setting up a work area safely with barriers, signage and controls
  • Cleaning techniques and waste disposal
  • Simulated tasks involving asbestos cement and textured coatings

Assessment

A written test and a practical assessment, both of which must be passed to gain the certificate.

Certification

An accredited Category B certificate, issued digitally on the same day.

Renewal

The certificate carries 12 months' validity from the date of issue. Book a Non-Licensed Asbestos Works Refresher annually to stay compliant.

Good to Know

Category B is a legal requirement under CAR 2012 for anyone carrying out non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed asbestos work — it is not the same as Asbestos Awareness, which is Category A and permits no disturbance at all. It also does not cover licensed removal, which requires Category C. NNLW obligations including HSE notification, health surveillance and record keeping are covered on the course.
