What You'll Learn

• Key legislation and guidance — HSE GS6 (4th Edition) and ENATS 43-8
• Identifying overhead line hazards: voltages, line types, risks and clearances
• Risk assessment and site planning, and applying control measures
• Use of safety equipment — GS6 goalposts, cable markers and signage, barriers, cones and bunting, and the Suparule height meter gauge
• Developing and applying a suitable and sufficient Safe System of Work
• Working clearances: minimum safe distances and approach boundaries
• Emergency procedures in the event of an incident

Assessment

A theoretical knowledge test plus a practical overview, delivered as a simulation or on-site demonstration.

Certification

A PGL Midlands Certificate in Avoiding Danger from Overhead Power Lines (GS6). This is a provider certificate rather than a regulated qualification.

Renewal

Refresher training is recommended every three years, or sooner depending on your role or site requirements.

Good to Know

GS6 is not a legal requirement by name, but it is widely mandated by principal contractors, utility providers and client-controlled sites, and it is how most organisations evidence competence for work near overhead lines. It is specific to avoiding overhead cable risks in construction and engineering — it does not replace qualifications for electrical installation or live working.
