CITB SMSTS Course in Sutton Coldfield
The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is the five-day qualification for the people who run construction sites. It forms part of the CITB Site Safety Plus suite, and most principal contractors treat it as a condition of appointment for anyone managing a site, a package or a phase of works.
Unlike awareness-level training, SMSTS is written for people who make decisions. It deals with what the law actually requires of a site manager, how to plan work so that risk is designed out rather than managed around, and how to hold a supply chain to the standard you have set. A good part of the week is spent on practical exercises and syndicate discussion rather than slides.
Who is the SMSTS Course Suitable For?
- Site managers, site agents and project managers
- Contracts managers with site safety accountability across several projects
- Supervisors moving up from SSSTS into a management role
- Anyone required to hold SMSTS as a condition of working for a principal contractor
What's Included in the SMSTS Course?
Course Duration
Five consecutive days. CITB does not permit partial attendance, so all five days must be completed.
Delivery Method

What You'll Learn
- Health and safety law as it applies to site management, and the duties it places on you personally
- The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, duty holder roles, and the information that must flow between them
- Risk assessment and method statements: producing them, reviewing them, and recognising when one is not fit for purpose
- Managing the activities that cause most construction fatalities: work at height, excavations, confined spaces, lifting operations and site transport
- Occupational health on site, including dust, noise, vibration, manual handling and mental health
- Fire prevention and control, temporary works, electrical safety and demolition
- Behavioural safety, inductions, toolbox talks and influencing a subcontracted workforce
- Accident investigation, RIDDOR reporting, monitoring and review
