Assessment and certification

Unit MHR1 is assessed by a practical exercise, with NEBOSH recommending around an hour for it. You watch a video of a manual handling activity in a workplace and assess it using HSE's tools and templates, which is as close to the actual job as a one-day assessment can reasonably get. Taught face to face, it normally takes place at the end of the day's training; studied by distance or e-learning, you complete it once the course is finished, with your Learning Partner booking the assessment. Results are issued within 24 working days, and the qualification parchment normally follows within 20 working days of the unit being confirmed. The qualification is broadly comparable to SCQF Level 6, comparable to RQF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This is not a lifting technique course

The two get confused constantly and they are not interchangeable. General manual handling training teaches workers to move loads safely and is usually a half-day or a day for the whole team. This qualification is for the person who has to assess the operation, decide whether the risk is acceptable and prioritise what to change. Most organisations that keep producing handling injuries have plenty of the first and none of the second.

Common questions

How long is the Manual Handling Risk Assessment course?

NEBOSH sets a minimum of six hours' study, with a recommendation of a further hour for the assessment, which is why it fits into a single day. Delivered live online it is usually split across two part-days instead.

What are the MAC and RAPP tools?

HSE's own manual handling assessment tools. The MAC tool, Manual Handling Assessment Charts, covers lifting, carrying and team handling. RAPP covers pushing and pulling. Both are free to download from HSE, and the training exists because using them correctly is what turns them into a defensible assessment rather than a colour chart.

How does it differ from ordinary manual handling training?

Ordinary manual handling courses train the people doing the handling. This qualifies you to assess and control the risk in the first place, which is the employer's duty under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations. Organisations generally need both, and the assessment side is the one more often missing.

Do I need the General Certificate first?

No. There are no entry requirements and this stands on its own. If you are building broader health and safety competence alongside it, the General Certificate covers manual handling as one topic among many rather than in this depth.
