Course Overview

Asbestos Awareness (Category A) training is a legal requirement for workers, and those who supervise them, who may come across asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) during their work but are not required to work with or remove asbestos. The course gives delegates the foundation knowledge they need to avoid carrying out work that will disturb asbestos.

Successfully completing this course helps employers show compliance with Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012), which requires adequate information, instruction and training for anyone liable to be exposed to asbestos.

Who needs the Asbestos Awareness (CAT A) qualification?

Asbestos Awareness training is designed for employees whose work could expose them to asbestos. It also suits anyone who wants a basic understanding of asbestos, and it is a useful starting point before progressing to non-licensed asbestos work or duty to manage training. Is asbestos awareness training a legal requirement?
Yes. Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires employers to provide information, instruction and training to anyone who may be exposed to asbestos in their work, and to those who supervise them.

Does this course qualify me to remove asbestos?
No. Category A awareness training teaches you to recognise asbestos and avoid disturbing it. Work that knowingly disturbs asbestos needs non-licensed asbestos work (Category B) training or above.

How long is the certificate valid?
The award is valid for 1 year, after which an Asbestos Awareness Refresher is the usual route to keep your training up to date.
