CDM for Clients Masterclass in Sutton Coldfield
This CDM for Clients Masterclass runs at the Vesey House training centre in Sutton Coldfield, delivered by PGL Midlands.
Rather than working through the regulations section by section, the course follows a realistic project scenario from conception to completion. Delegates apply CDM principles and make the key decisions at each stage of the project lifecycle, which is a far better test of understanding than a syllabus walkthrough.
Course Duration
Approximately six hours.
Delivery Method
Classroom-based and tutor-facilitated, combining interactive workshops, group discussions, practical exercises, case study analysis and project-based learning.
Who Should Attend
Anyone holding client duties under CDM 2015 who wants to move beyond basic compliance to discharging those duties properly on live projects.
- Commercial and domestic clients commissioning construction work
- Property developers and development managers
- Estates and facilities management teams
- Project and programme managers
- Asset managers and property professionals
- Local authority officers procuring and managing construction projects
- Housing associations and registered providers

What You'll Learn

- Understand the purpose and structure of CDM
- Identify client duties and legal responsibilities
- Appoint and manage duty holders appropriately
- Understand competency requirements
- Determine when a project is notifiable
- Manage design risk effectively
- Understand the importance of surveys and pre-construction information
- Promote effective cooperation, coordination and communication
- Understand Construction Phase Plan requirements
- Recognise the limits of client responsibility
- Monitor arrangements without managing day-to-day construction activities
- Understand CDM Part 4 requirements and high-risk activities
- Manage change across the project lifecycle
- Understand project close-out and the Health and Safety File
- Distinguish between CDM duty holders and Building Safety Act roles
Good to Know
Two of the learning outcomes are worth singling out. Knowing where client responsibility stops — monitoring arrangements without taking over day-to-day construction management — is where well-meaning clients most often create problems for themselves. And the distinction between CDM duty holders and Building Safety Act roles matters increasingly, since the two regimes overlap but are not the same and the titles are easy to confuse.
