This SMSTS course is for you if you’re considering, or already have, responsibilities for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff e.g. site manager.
The Site management safety training scheme (SMSTS) is a five-day course designed for site managers, or aspiring site managers. It is designed for those with responsibility for managing, monitoring, implementing and reporting in a construction environment. The course covers relevant health, safety and environmental legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.
The SMSTS course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

Online SMSTS Course
We provide the choice of Interactive Video Online Learning for individuals working remotely who aspire to attain their CITB SMSTS qualification conveniently from their home or office. Our SMSTS online course is led by an accredited Site Safety Plus tutor, delivered remotely via Zoom video conferencing, ensuring an interactive classroom experience.
Attendance - Full attendance of the course is mandatory to achieve a pass. Should your internet connection fail during the course for a prolonged period of time, or repeatedly, you may not be able to re-join as requested by the trainer, unless it can be re-established within 5 minutes. This is so general learning is not disturbed for other participants.
Course Publications - the day before your course is due to commence, you will receive an email from our training team containing a link and voucher code to download your copy of the supporting publications for the course - Construction Site Safety - The comprehensive guide (GE700) and Construction site management delegate workbook (XA6). (Please double check your spam or junk folder).
As part of this process you will be required to download a reader app:
- For PCS: Once you follow the link provided on the email, you will be taken to the download screen. This download is approximately 30 MB in size and depending on your internet connection speed could take up to 1 hour to download (typically it takes around 5 mins).
- For Tablets: Download the supporting CITB Health Safety and Environment Publications reader app in your app store (this is free of charge).
Please note: your subscription will last for a defined period of 12 months. During this period the publication will automatically update with any amendments. After 12 months, the publication can still be viewed but there will not be any new updates.
Joining the Video Learning - Our courses are conducted via Zoom, and you will receive your personalised meeting link as part of your course enrolment instructions. We always recommend downloading the App in preparation of the course. Please familiarise yourself with this prior to your course.
SMSTS Course Aims
The course aims to help site managers to:
- manage and implement health, safety and environmental aspects on site, in accordance with current legal provisions and within the context of their management role
- implement new guidance and industry best practice
- develop an understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety, welfare and the environment
- recognise that a safe site is efficient, economical, productive and environmentally friendly.
At the end of the period of training, delegates will be aware of, and able to implement or state:
- all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their daily work
- new guidance and industry best practice
- duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, however, delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a site manager. Previous health and safety knowledge is recommended. Those without previous health and safety management experience are recommended to sit the two-day SSSTS course. Delegates must be competent in written and spoken English necessary for operating efficiently at site management level.
Photographic ID will be requested by the tutor at the start of the course i.e. Driving Licence/Passport.
Please be aware that it is a requirement of our Awarding Body - Site Safety Plus (CITB) that ALL delegates attending this course must read and understand English.
Learner Numbers
The minimum number of delegates per course is 4. The maximum number of delegates per course is 20. For online courses the maximum number is 12. These are stipulated by the awarding body and are not subject to appeal.

The CITB SMSTS is part of the Site Safety Plus suite of courses. CITB Site Safety Plus provide a range of courses provides a range of courses for people seeking to develop their skills in the building, civil engineering and allied industries. Designed from operative to senior manager level, they provide the skills you need to progress through the construction industry, from the one day Health and Safety Awareness course to the five-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS). We also offer refresher courses so that workers are always kept up to date with the latest techniques and industry practice to be safe whilst on the job.
