Pre-requisites
Candidates must be 16 or over, have a good understanding of the English language, and be medically fit. Completion of either 6160-02 or 6160-03 is required before attempting this qualification. Candidates holding medium risk (6160-02) can only supervise medium risk confined spaces and act as entry controller. Candidates holding high risk (6160-03) can supervise high, medium, or low risk confined spaces and act as entry controller for all levels.

Qualification is valid for 3 years from the date of issue on the certificate.
Course Outline
This unit is designed for supervisors of confined spaces. It covers planning and allocating activities for a team, pre-entry procedures, entry and exit into confined spaces, selecting relevant personnel, communication arrangements, and initiation and control of emergency procedures.
Course Aims and Objectives
The aim of this unit is to follow the national occupational standard required for controlling entries and arrangements in a confined space. The qualification applies to both water and non-water environments and may include supervising tasks for teams working in sewer treatment processes, tunnelling, construction, power, drainage, and sewer systems, or other confined spaces subject to specified risks.
Course Content
- Implement and arrange procedures for teams working in the confined space
- Supervise the control of team entry and exit into and from the confined space
- Ensure all required procedures are adhered to by the team
- Control all aspects if an emergency arises
- Be compliant and understand health and safety protocols and legislation
- Be confident with the processes and procedures expected for the role of supervisor
- Ensure all necessary equipment is safe, suitable, checked, and tested
