Entry by risk level — 6160-01, 6160-09 and 6160-03
6160-01 Low Risk covers spaces where escape is straightforward and no breathing apparatus is needed.
6160-09 Medium Risk covers entrant and entry controller duties where escape may need assistance.

Entry control and supervision — 6160-04 and 6160-05
6160-04 Control Entry and Arrangements is the top man role — controlling access, monitoring the atmosphere and holding the permit.
6160-05 Supervising Teams covers planning and supervising the operation itself. These are the roles the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 expect to be filled by named, trained people; an entry qualification alone does not cover either.
Rescue and recovery — 6160-07 and 6160-08
6160-07 Direct Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties and 6160-08 Working as a Member of a Rescue and Recovery Team. Regulation 5 requires suitable and sufficient arrangements for rescue before anyone enters — calling the fire service is not a rescue plan. A large share of confined space fatalities are would-be rescuers, which is precisely why these are separate qualifications rather than an add-on to entry training.
Which units does a team actually need?
Rarely just one. A typical medium or high risk entry needs trained entrants, a top man controlling entry, a supervisor, and a rescue capability standing by — four distinct competences drawn from four different units. Training the entrants and stopping there is the common and serious gap, because it leaves the operation without a lawful rescue arrangement. Having the full 6160 range at one centre lets a whole team be built in one place.
