Pre-requisites

Candidates must be 16 or over, have a good understanding of the English language, and be medically fit. Completion of 6160-03 & 6160-08 is required. Candidates can act as entry controller (6160-04) or supervisor (6160-05) for all types of confined space.

Qualification is valid for 3 years from the date of issue on the certificate.

Course Outline

This qualification is for persons responsible for directing the activities of a rescue and recovery team in a confined space. Roles may include rescue team leader, entry controller, or supervisor overseeing rescue and recovery of casualties. It covers planning, preparing and initiating emergency operations, organising and mobilising rescue teams, monitoring activities, and recording incidents or compiling reports where required.

Course Aims and Objectives

The aim of this unit is to follow the national occupational standard for directing emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from a confined space. The qualification applies to both water and non-water environments and includes managing rescue teams during casualty extraction, including all emergency procedures.

Course Content

  • Plan and prepare emergency teams and associated operations
  • Initiate rescue teams and control entry and exit processes into the confined space
  • Maintain standards and monitor procedures for rescue team members
  • Understand the principles and duties of a rescue team leader, including equipment, documentation, and compliance with legislation
