Prove your slinger signaller competence with an NPORS test

This one-day NPORS N402 Slinger Signaller experienced worker test is for slinger/signallers who already have real experience in the role but no current card. There is no training element: you go straight to the NPORS theory and practical tests, and on passing you receive an NPORS card that main contractors recognise.

The slinger/signaller attaches and detaches loads and directs the crane or plant operator, so every planned lift relies on their competence.

The test is delivered in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire by Safeteam Training Group, a CITB Approved Training Organisation with its head office in Raunds, Northamptonshire.

Who Is This NPORS N402 Slinger Signaller Test For?

The experienced worker test is for slinger/signallers who can already carry out the role confidently and safely and who meet the provider's experience criteria. If you are new to the role, or have only limited experience, the novice NPORS N402 Slinger Signaller course is the better route because it includes the training you need before testing.

Course Details

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Delivery: Theory and practical testing in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP22 4AD
  • Accreditation: NPORS (N402)
  • Assessment: a 25-question multiple-choice theory test and a practical test

What the Test Covers

The test checks the same knowledge and skills the novice course teaches, so come prepared to demonstrate:

  • The legal duties and responsibilities of the role
  • The PPE required and keeping yourself safe in the working area
  • Selecting and pre-use checking chains, slings, shackles and other lifting accessories
  • Estimating load weight and centre of gravity, and choosing a slinging method
  • Hand signals and radio communication with the crane or plant operator
  • Planning and communication before work starts
  • Working to the method statement and the site's safe system of work

NPORS Card Options

Successful candidates can receive an NPORS card in one of the following forms:

  • NPORS Traditional card – typically valid for between three and five years, but less widely accepted on construction sites than the CSCS-logoed versions
  • NPORS Red Trained Operator card (CSCS logo) – valid for two years, for candidates who have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test within the last two years
  • NPORS Blue Competent Operator card (CSCS logo) – valid for five years, for operators who also hold a relevant NVQ

To move from a Red card to a Blue card you need to complete the relevant NVQ, which is assessed on site while you work.

NPORS N402 Slinger Signaller FAQs

How long is the NPORS N402 Slinger Signaller experienced worker test?

One day at the Aylesbury venue, covering the theory test and the practical test.

Is there any training on the day?

No. The experienced worker test is an assessment only, so it is designed for slinger/signallers with regular, recent experience in the role. If you need training first, choose the novice course.

What happens if I am not ready for the test?

Speak to the provider before booking. Safeteam checks each delegate's experience and can recommend the novice course instead if it is a better fit.

What does the NPORS theory test involve?

A multiple-choice test of 25 questions, taken alongside a practical test.

Do I need the CITB HS&E test?

Only if you want the CSCS-logoed Red or Blue card. For that version you must have passed the HS&E test within two years of applying for the card.

Where is the course held?

At Safeteam's training venue in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP22 4AD.
