NPORS Courses

NPORS is one of the two main UK plant operator card schemes, covering excavators, dumpers, rollers, telehandlers, forklifts, access platforms and lifting operations. It is CSCS Alliance approved, and cards taken via the CSCS-logo route are accepted on sites requiring CSCS. The practical difference from CPCS is where you can be tested — NPORS allows training and testing on your own site.

NPORS or CPCS?

Choose NPORS if

You want training and testing at your own premises, you are certifying several operators at once, or you need a faster and lower-cost route to a recognised card.

Choose CPCS if

Your site specifies CPCS by name. CPCS testing must happen at an accredited centre and needs a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test from the last two years.

Before you book

Check what your principal contractor accepts. Both schemes test to national occupational standards, but some clients name one scheme in their prequalification requirements.

Novice, Refresher or Test Only?

Novice

Limited or no experience of the machine. One to five days plus the test day, depending on category.

Refresher

Already experienced and need certification. Usually one to three days including the test, aimed at preparing for assessment.

Test Only

A single test day, no training given. Only suitable if you recently gained a comparable qualification under another scheme.

Moving from a trained operator card to a competent operator card normally requires the relevant Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations, assessed through your everyday work. Start it well before your card expires — letting it lapse can mean repeating theory and practical testing. Related: forklift and telehandler, IPAF, PASMA, working at height and CITB courses.
