Why This PAT Testing Course Is Important
Faults in electrical appliances can cause shocks, burns, or fires. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), portable appliances account for a significant portion of electrical accidents and fires. Employers must control electrical hazards under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and related regulations, including the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and PUWER 1998. PAT testing helps satisfy these legal duties.
About This Course
This online Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) course provides the knowledge needed to carry out visual inspections and tests of portable appliances using a PAT device, including procedures, results, and record-keeping. Trainees will understand how to conduct safe, effective PAT with sufficient experience and knowledge.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PAT test?
Portable appliance testing (PAT) checks that electrical devices are safe to use. It involves visual inspections and electrical testing using a portable appliance tester. Devices are marked as “safe to use” or “unsafe” based on results.
Is PAT a legal requirement?
PAT testing is not explicitly named in law, but employers must maintain electrical equipment in safe condition under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. PAT testing is widely recognised as good practice.
Do you need to be qualified to carry out PAT testing?
There’s no formal qualification required, but testers must be competent — possessing the right combination of knowledge, skills, and experience to conduct PAT safely and legally.
Will I receive a certificate after completing the course?
Yes. After successfully completing the course assessment, you’ll receive a RoSPA-assured training certificate available for instant download.
How long is the PAT certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for three years, after which the course should be repeated to refresh knowledge and renew certification.
What does the course involve?
The course takes approximately one hour and covers electrical safety principles, PAT testing equipment, testing procedures, record-keeping, and reporting.
Will I learn how to carry out a PAT test?
The course explains each step in the PAT test process with video demonstrations, but carrying out full PAT testing safely requires hands-on experience in addition to training.
