The five-day

The two-day
SSSTS runs in the classroom and live online, with the one-day refresher available both ways as well. SSSTS is aimed at supervisors, foremen and gangers rather than those with overall site control — if you are running the site rather than a gang, SMSTS is the correct course. Both carry a five-year certificate with a refresher route.
Health and Safety Awareness — the CSCS route
The one-day
CITB Health and Safety Awareness course runs monthly and is accepted by CSCS as the training element of a Labourers Green Card application. It is the usual starting point for anyone new to site work, and the natural first rung below SSSTS. See all

First aid — EFAW and FAW
Both the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work and the three-day First Aid at Work run in Wolverhampton. Asbestos awareness and manual handling
Half-day sessions run as an asbestos awareness morning and a manual handling afternoon, so both can be covered in a single day out.
Asbestos awareness is a legal requirement under Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 for anyone whose work could disturb asbestos in a pre-2000 building — it teaches recognition and avoidance, not removal.

Day release or block week?
SMSTS here is day release, one day a week for five weeks, not five consecutive days. The certificate is identical either way — the difference is entirely operational. Day release keeps a manager on site four days out of five, which suits live projects; a block week gets it over with, which suits someone between contracts. Delegates must attend all five days whichever pattern they choose, so check the full run of dates against holidays and shutdowns before booking.
Classroom or live online?
SMSTS, SSSTS and the SSSTS Refresher all run live online over Microsoft Teams as well as in the Wolverhampton classroom. This is tutor-led training at a scheduled time, not self-paced e-learning, and the CITB certificate issued is the same. You will need a laptop or PC with a working webcam and microphone. Online delivery suits contractors travelling from outside the West Midlands; the classroom suits anyone who would rather be in the room, and includes lunch.
