CIPD Qualifications from Level 3 to Level 7 by Distance Learning
We Are HR delivers CIPD qualifications by distance learning across all three levels — Foundation at Level 3, Associate Diplomas at Level 5, and Advanced Diplomas at Level 7 — with separate pathways for people management and for learning and development. CIPD membership grade follows the qualification level, which is what makes these the standard credential for an HR career.
Level 3 — Foundation
The CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice, the entry qualification for anyone starting in HR or moving into it from another function. It covers the fundamentals of people practice and leads to CIPD Foundation membership.
Level 5 — Associate Diplomas
Two Level 5 pathways: the Associate Diploma in Senior People Management for generalist HR roles, and the Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning & Development for those specialising in L&D. Level 5 leads to Associate CIPD membership and is the usual qualification for an HR advisor or manager.
Level 7 — Advanced Diplomas
The Advanced Diploma in Strategic People Management and the Advanced Diploma in Strategic Learning & Development, both at postgraduate level. Level 7 leads towards Chartered membership and is aimed at people operating at or heading towards HR director level.
People management or learning and development?
At Levels 5 and 7 the choice is between a generalist HR pathway and an L&D specialism. Senior People Management and Strategic People Management cover the full HR remit — employment relations, resourcing, reward, organisational performance. The Learning & Development routes go deeper on capability building, learning design and organisational development. Pick based on where you intend to specialise, not on which sounds broader.
Which level should I start at?
Level 3 if you are new to HR. Level 5 if you already work in HR and want the qualification that matches an advisor or manager role — it does not require Level 3 first. Level 7 if you have substantial experience and are moving towards strategic or director-level work. Each level maps to a CIPD membership grade, which is often what employers are actually asking for.
