Street Works Signing, Lighting and Guarding for Operatives

This CABWI unit enables candidates to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to sign, light and guard a street works site. Candidates learn to assess the site and put the right provisions in place for its location, including safe passage for pedestrians and site personnel, protection of vehicular traffic, and the needs of cyclists and horse riders.

Who Is This Course For?

Operatives who set up and maintain signing, lighting and guarding on roads and footways under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.

Course Content

• Types of work, basic principles and legal requirements for signing and guarding
• On-site risk assessment, traffic control methods and speed management
• Operating portable traffic signals and Stop/Go control
• Works on footways, cycle lanes, tracks and routes, and near tramways and railways
• Planning and carrying out a signing, lighting and guarding layout

Certification

Successful candidates are registered with SWQR and CABWI and receive a Street Works Register ID card. Street works cards must be renewed every 5 years.

What is NRSWA Unit O1?

Unit O1 is the operative unit for signing, lighting and guarding a street works site. It was previously known as Unit 2.

Does a street works site also need a supervisor?

Yes. Works on the highway need a supervisor qualified in Unit S1 as well as operatives with Unit O1.

How long is the street works card valid?

Street works cards must be renewed every 5 years.
