IPAF 1b Operator Training (Static Boom)
This course covers the IPAF 1b category: static boom and push-around boom platforms fitted with outriggers, such as spider lifts and trailer- or van-mounted platforms. Unlike 3a and 3b machines, 1b platforms are set up from the ground and cannot be driven or repositioned while the platform is elevated. Delivered at Pulse Hire's IPAF training centre in Wakefield.
Course Location
This course runs at Pulse Hire's training centre: Unit 1 Benton Office Park, Bennett Ave, Horbury, Wakefield, WF4 5RA, conveniently located near the M1 and M62. On-site training at your own workplace is also available – get in touch to discuss.
Who Should Attend
This course is for operators who need to use static or push-around boom platforms with outriggers, such as spider lifts. It's commonly taken alongside or in addition to the 3a/3b categories, but can also be taken on its own.
Course Content
The course covers the IPAF 1b category, including:
- Setting up and positioning static boom platforms, including the use of outriggers
- Pre-use inspections and stability checks
- Safe operation from ground-level controls
- Hazard awareness specific to static boom equipment
Course Duration
This is a 1-day course, starting at 8am at the Wakefield training centre.
Assessment
Candidates complete a theory test and a practical operating assessment on 1b category equipment.
Certification
Successful candidates receive the IPAF Powered Access Licence (PAL) card with the 1b category added (or issued, if taken as a standalone course). The PAL card is valid for 5 years.

What is the difference between 1b and 3a/3b?
3a and 3b cover mobile platforms that can be driven and operated while elevated. 1b covers static boom platforms with outriggers, which are set up from the ground and cannot be moved while elevated, such as spider lifts.
Do I need to hold 3a or 3b before taking this course?
No, 1b can be taken as a standalone category, although it's often combined with 3a and/or 3b training.
How long is the IPAF PAL card valid for?
The IPAF Powered Access Licence (PAL) card is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
