Construction & Engineering Courses

Construction and engineering training covering statutory safety schemes, plant and access equipment, site management and NVQ qualifications — delivered in the classroom, live online and as e-learning. Most UK sites require a valid CSCS card, which depends on the right combination of health and safety training and recognised qualification, so the place to start is usually your role rather than a subject.

Where to Start by Role

Operatives & New Entrants

Start with CITB Health & Safety Awareness, the one-day course underpinning most green card applications. Add hazard-specific training for the work you actually do.

Supervisors & Gangers

SSSTS is the recognised step up for anyone taking responsibility for others on site, with a refresher every five years. IOSH Working Safely suits supervisors outside the CITB scheme.

Site Managers & Agents

SMSTS is the standard for site managers, agents and project managers, again on a five-year cycle. IOSH Managing Safely and NEBOSH suit those building a safety career.

Plant & Access Operators

Card-based training tied to the machine you use: CPCS and NPORS for plant, IPAF for powered access, PASMA for mobile towers, and forklift and telehandler categories.

Engineering Construction

The CCNSG Safety Passport is required for access to most engineering construction and process industry sites, and is separate from the CITB scheme — holding SMSTS or SSSTS does not cover it.

Evidencing Competence

Training demonstrates knowledge; Construction NVQs evidence competence through workplace assessment, and are what most blue, gold and black CSCS cards actually require. Levels 2 to 7 cover operatives through to senior managers.

Health, Safety & Compliance

Meet legal safety standards and reduce site risk. Core qualifications include CITB SMSTS and SSSTS, IOSH Managing Safely and NEBOSH.

Specialist hazard training covers working at height, confined spaces, asbestos awareness and manual handling.

Plant, Equipment & Machinery

Safe selection, operation and inspection of mechanical systems and tools. Covers CPCS and NPORS, forklift and telehandler, PASMA, IPAF, harness use and welding and fabrication.

Site Management & Development

Overseeing activity so work is planned, monitored and executed safely — enforcing regulations, managing risk and leading by example. Includes Temporary Works Coordinator and Supervisor, CDM Regulations and CITB SEATS.

NVQ Qualifications

Construction NVQs from Level 2 through to Level 7 provide nationally recognised, work-based qualifications for operatives, supervisors and managers, assessed in the workplace rather than by examination.

Most UK construction sites require workers to hold a valid CSCS card, which depends on the right combination of health and safety training and recognised qualifications. The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) sets the standard for site safety training through its Site Safety Plus scheme, while NVQs evidence occupational competence.
