SIA Door Supervisor
The Door Supervisor qualification, delivered in classroom. It is the broadest of the SIA licences — a door supervisor licence covers security guarding as well as licensed premises work, which is why most people take it rather than the guarding licence alone.
SIA Security Guard
Security Guard training in classroom, for static guarding and patrol roles. Narrower than door supervision, and worth taking only if you are certain you will never work licensed premises, since the fee is the same and the training difference modest.
SIA CCTV Operator
CCTV Operator for public space surveillance, delivered live online. A distinct discipline covering monitoring, evidence handling and the legal framework around surveillance — including data protection duties that apply to recorded footage.
The qualification is not the licence
Training is only part of it. An SIA licence application also requires identity and right-to-work checks, a criminality check, and the licence fee paid to the SIA directly. The course gives you the qualification; the SIA issues the licence once the application clears, which typically takes several weeks. Factor that gap in before accepting work.
Which licence should I take?
Door supervision for almost everyone — it covers the widest range of work including pubs, clubs and events, and subsumes guarding. Security guard only if you are certain about static roles. CCTV is a separate specialism rather than a step up, suited to control room work rather than front-line security.
