Course Overview

The CITB SMSTS Refresher is the two-day renewal for site managers who already hold the Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate. It brings delegates up to date on new and forthcoming legislation and Approved Codes of Practice, looks at what the HSE is currently targeting in construction, and revisits how safety is managed day to day on a live project.

Who should attend?

Site managers, project managers and senior supervisors with an in-date SMSTS or SMSTS Refresher certificate who need to renew it and refresh their knowledge of current law and practice.

• Recent changes to legislation and ACOPs, and their practical effect on site
• Upcoming and proposed legislation
• RIDDOR, accident statistics, and the causes and costs of accidents
• Current HSE priorities for the construction industry
• Safety management systems, policies, plans and measuring performance
• Managing contractors
• Consultation and communication, including site inductions and toolbox talks
• Behavioural safety, human error and stress

On completion, delegates will be able to:

• Apply updated health, safety, welfare and environmental law on their sites
• Put current guidance and good practice to work
• Restate their duties and accountability as a site manager

Continuous assessment through group work, presentations and syndicate exercises, followed by a final multiple-choice test

Prerequisites

An SMSTS or SMSTS Refresher certificate that is still valid on the course start date, valid photo ID (passport or driving licence) and competence in English. A copy of the certificate must be supplied before the course.

Delivery Method

This course is delivered face to face in a classroom at 27 Campus Five, Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, SG6 2JF, by Safety For Business, a CITB Approved Training Organisation. Letchworth sits just off junction 9 of the A1(M), close to Hitchin, Baldock and Stevenage. Drinks and a cold buffet lunch are provided on both days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I attend if my SMSTS has already expired?
No. The refresher has to be started before the existing certificate runs out. Delegates without a valid certificate cannot be admitted and will need the full 5-day SMSTS instead.

How long does the renewed certificate last?
A further 5 years.

Is there an exam?
Yes. Alongside the group exercises across both days, there is a multiple-choice test at the end of the course.

On successful completion, your certificate is issued by the awarding body or the training provider.

CITB courses: SMSTS, SSSTS and Health and Safety Awareness certificates are issued by CITB and are valid for five years. Complete the matching refresher course before your certificate expires to renew it for another five years. If it lapses, you'll need to retake the full course.

First aid: First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work certificates are valid for three years. Requalify before they expire to keep your cover in place.

Other courses: fire marshal, manual handling, asbestos awareness, abrasive wheels and ladder courses lead to a certificate of completion. Face fit testing provides a fit test record for each mask tested.
