CITB SMSTS Refresher (SMSTS-R) in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands (Classroom)

The CITB SMSTS Refresher (SMSTS-R) is the two-day course that renews an existing Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate for a further five years. It is not an introduction to site management: it assumes you already hold SMSTS and updates you on what has changed since you last sat it.

The timing matters more than anything else on this course. Your SMSTS certificate is valid for five years, and the refresher has to be completed before that date. Once it expires you are no longer eligible for the two-day route and have to sit the full five-day course again — twice the time off site and roughly twice the cost. Most people who get caught out simply lost track of the expiry date.

What the course covers

• Changes to health and safety legislation, regulation and CITB guidance since your original certificate
• Current best practice in risk assessment and method statements
• The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and how duty holder responsibilities apply in practice
• Managing the high-risk activities that continue to cause most construction fatalities
• Occupational health, including dust, noise, vibration and mental health at work
• Leadership, behavioural safety and holding a supply chain to standard
• Incident investigation, monitoring and continual improvement

Assessment and certification

Assessment is continuous across the two days, with an end-of-course examination. Successful delegates receive a new CITB Site Safety Plus SMSTS certificate valid for a further five years.

• Site managers and agents whose SMSTS certificate is approaching five years old
• Contracts managers keeping their site safety credentials current for tender and PQQ purposes
• Anyone whose principal contractor audits training records against certificate dates

• You must already hold a valid SMSTS certificate — this is not an entry-level course
• Book before your expiry date; there is no grace period and no discretion
• Bring your existing certificate details, as the provider will need them

Venue

Delivered at the Sutton Coldfield training centre, with on-site parking and easy access from the M6 and M42. Joining instructions confirming the exact address are issued after booking.
