Tones Are the Reason to Use a Tutor

Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral one, and they carry meaning — the same syllable at a different pitch is a different word entirely. Learners routinely practise for months with tones that are subtly wrong, because there is nobody to say so.

This is the single strongest case for one-to-one tuition in any language on this list. Everything else in Mandarin can be self-studied to a point; tones genuinely cannot.

Characters, Simplified or Traditional

Mainland China and Singapore use simplified characters; Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau use traditional. Decide which you need before starting, and note that spoken Mandarin is broadly shared while Cantonese is a separate language rather than a dialect.

HSK Preparation

HSK runs from levels 1 to 6, with HSK 4 to 6 commonly expected for university study or professional roles in China. A separate HSKK examination covers speaking, which the main HSK does not test — worth knowing, since a strong HSK result alone does not demonstrate spoken ability.

The Grammar Is Easier Than You Think

No verb conjugation, no gendered nouns, no plurals, no tenses in the European sense. Chinese grammar is considerably simpler than French or German. The difficulty sits entirely in pronunciation and writing, which is why lesson time is best spent speaking.
