Bokmål or Nynorsk?

Norway has two official written standards. Bokmål is used by the large majority and is what nearly all courses, media and official material use — it is the right default. Nynorsk is used by a minority, mainly in western Norway, and you will encounter it in schools and some public documents.

You do not need both. Learn Bokmål unless you have a specific reason not to, but be aware Nynorsk exists so it does not surprise you.

Dialects Are the Real Challenge

Norwegian dialects vary considerably and — unlike in many countries — people speak their own dialect in all settings rather than switching to a standard form. There is no spoken standard to fall back on. Textbook Norwegian will not sound like the person you meet in Bergen or Tromsø.

This is the strongest argument for a tutor, and for choosing one from the region you are moving to.

The three Scandinavian languages are mutually intelligible in writing and, with practice, in speech. Norwegian is often described as the easiest bridge between the other two.
