Grammar Is Easy. Pronunciation Is Not.
Swedish grammar is close enough to English to feel comfortable quickly — familiar word order, no case system, straightforward verb conjugation that does not change by person.
The difficulty is sound. Swedish has a pitch accent, where the melody of a word carries meaning, plus nine vowels and the notoriously hard sj sound. None of this is learnable from text, and getting it wrong is the main reason learners are answered in English.
Everyone Speaks English Here Too
As in the Netherlands, near-universal English fluency makes immersion hard to come by. A tutor who keeps the lesson in Swedish is often the only reliable speaking practice available until you are past the awkward stage.
Also Useful For Norwegian and Danish
The three are mutually intelligible in writing and, with practice, in speech. Learning one gives you substantial reading access to the other two — worth knowing if you are choosing between them.
