Five Tones and No Spaces

Thai has five tones, all meaning-bearing, and a script of forty-four consonants and over thirty vowel forms written without spaces between words. Tone is determined by a combination of consonant class, vowel length and tone marks — a system that is learnable but genuinely needs teaching.

Many long-term residents speak reasonable conversational Thai and never learn to read, because the script looks forbidding. That is a fair choice, but it does cap your progress, and a tutor makes the script far less daunting than self-study does.

Politeness Particles Matter

Thai sentences typically end with a particle that varies by the speaker's gender and the formality of the situation. Omitting them is not neutral — it reads as abrupt. This is exactly the kind of thing a native tutor corrects instinctively and a textbook mentions once.

Grammar Is Simple

No verb conjugation, no plurals, no tenses, no articles. As with Vietnamese and Mandarin, the difficulty is entirely in sound and script, so speaking practice is the best use of lesson time.
