Modern or Biblical? Two Different Goals

They share an alphabet and a great deal of vocabulary, but they are not the same study. Modern Hebrew is a living spoken language with contemporary grammar and idiom. Biblical Hebrew is read rather than spoken, with archaic verb forms and a vocabulary shaped by the texts themselves.

Someone fluent in modern Hebrew can read biblical text with effort but will miss nuance; someone trained in biblical Hebrew often cannot order coffee in Tel Aviv. Decide which you need — or ask for both explicitly — and choose a tutor who teaches it.

The Script

Written right to left, and everyday Hebrew omits most vowels, which are indicated by marks that appear in children's books, prayer books and dictionaries but not in newspapers. That means reading fluency depends on already knowing the words, which is why tutored reading practice matters more here than in most languages.

Root Structure

Hebrew is built on three-consonant roots that generate whole families of related words through fixed patterns. Once explained it makes vocabulary far more learnable — but it is genuinely hard to infer on your own.
