Northern or Southern? Decide Before You Start

Vietnamese has significant regional variation. Northern Vietnamese, centred on Hanoi, has six tones and is the standard used in formal broadcasting. Southern Vietnamese, centred on Ho Chi Minh City, merges two of those tones and differs in pronunciation and some vocabulary.

Speakers understand each other, but for a learner the tonal difference is significant enough that you should pick the one for where you are going and find a tutor from that region.

The Tones Are Why You Need a Tutor

Six tones, all meaning-bearing. Get the tone wrong and you have said a different word — often an unrelated or unfortunate one. This cannot be self-corrected, because a learner cannot hear their own error.

The compensation is that the script is Latin-based, with diacritics marking tone and vowel quality. No new writing system to learn, which puts Vietnamese well ahead of Thai or Chinese on that front.

Grammar Is Straightforward

No verb conjugation, no plurals, no tenses in the European sense, no grammatical gender. Difficulty sits almost entirely in pronunciation, which means lesson time is best spent speaking rather than on grammar drills.
