Ancient and Modern Greek Are Not the Same Thing

Worth stating plainly, because it catches people out. If you studied classical Greek at school you will recognise the alphabet and some vocabulary, but pronunciation, grammar and everyday usage have all moved on considerably. Modern Greek is what is taught here and what people speak.

Why One-to-One for Greek

Greek has relatively little quality self-study material compared with the major European languages, and what exists thins out quickly beyond beginner level. A tutor is often the only practical route past the basics.

The script takes a couple of weeks. Beyond that, the challenges are noun cases, verb aspect and a stress system that is marked in writing but still needs a listener to get right.

Greece or Cyprus

Standard Modern Greek is used in both, but Cypriot Greek differs enough in everyday speech that a Cypriot tutor is worth seeking if that is where you are heading.
