Learn Japanese with a One-to-One Online Tutor

Great For

JLPT candidates, people relocating to Japan for work, anime and media learners wanting to move beyond passive comprehension, and anyone who has learned hiragana and stalled.

Why One-to-One Matters More Here

Japanese is genuinely difficult for English speakers — three writing systems, a grammar structure that inverts English word order, and a politeness system where choosing the wrong register is a social error rather than a grammatical one.

That last point is the strongest argument for a tutor. Keigo and the casual and polite forms are not well taught by apps, and using plain form with a manager or keigo with a friend both land badly. A native tutor corrects register in real time, which nothing else does.

Kanji

Roughly 2,000 characters are needed for general literacy, and self-study kanji routines fail more often than they succeed. A tutor keeps the pace honest and ties characters to words you actually use rather than isolated drilling.

JLPT Preparation

The JLPT runs from N5 to N1, and N2 or N1 is commonly expected for professional work in Japan. It tests reading and listening only — no speaking — so a candidate can pass N2 and still struggle to hold a conversation. If your goal is working in Japan, treat the JLPT as necessary rather than sufficient, and keep speaking practice going alongside it.
