Korean's writing system is genuinely learnable in a weekend — it was designed to be. That early win misleads people into thinking the language will continue at that pace, and it does not.

The difficulty is elsewhere: sound change rules that mean words are pronounced quite differently from how they are spelled, a speech-level system where the same sentence has formal, polite and casual forms, and honorifics that shift depending on the relative age and status of everyone involved. Getting these wrong is not a small error in Korean — it reads as rudeness.

Speech Levels and Honorifics

This is the strongest argument for one-to-one study. A native tutor tells you when a form is inappropriate for the situation, which no app or textbook can do reliably. Age hierarchy affects daily speech in ways that have no English equivalent.

TOPIK Preparation

TOPIK I covers levels 1 to 2, TOPIK II covers 3 to 6. Level 3 or 4 is commonly needed for university admission and many visa routes; level 5 or 6 for professional work. Confirm the specific level required for your purpose before setting a target.
