Ukrainian Is Not a Dialect of Russian

They are separate East Slavic languages with their own grammar, vocabulary and literary traditions. Ukrainian shares more vocabulary with Polish than many people expect, and uses a Cyrillic alphabet with several letters Russian does not have.

If you already speak Russian, you have a real head start on structure — cases, aspect, similar sentence patterns — but the vocabulary differences are substantial enough that comprehension does not transfer as smoothly as people assume.
