New Jersey Life & Health Insurance Continuing Education
New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance approved online continuing education for life, health and annuity producers. Approved provider ID# 30445, listed on the state's Approved Insurance Education Providers list as At Your Pace Online.
New Jersey CE Requirements
- Resident producers: 24 hours per two-year term, of which at least 3 must be ethics. The remaining hours may be taken in any approved line of authority.
- Resident adjusters: 15 hours of adjuster-specific coursework per renewal period.
- Repeats: a course counts once per renewal period, but may be retaken for credit in a later one.
Nothing Carries Over — Plan Accordingly
New Jersey does not allow excess CE hours to carry from one biennium to the next. Anything above 24 is lost. Most states permit 12 or more to roll forward, so if you are used to banking hours, that habit does not work here.
The Annuity Rule Changed in April 2025
New Jersey adopted revisions to the Suitability in Annuity Transactions Model Regulation. Producers licensed on or after 21 April 2025 must complete a four-hour best interest course. Producers licensed before that date were required to complete a single one-hour course by 21 October 2025. If you sell annuities and have not addressed this, check your position.
Exam Rules Are Format-Dependent
Only self-study courses require a monitored exam. Online courses approved by the Department need no monitor — comprehension quizzes at 70% suffice. Classroom and webinar courses are attendance-based with no exam at all. Where a monitor is required, they must have no financial interest in your outcome. Pass mark 70%, unlimited retakes.
Renewal, Fees and Deadlines
Licences expire on the last day of your birth month every other year, based on your original licensing year. You may renew within 90 days of expiry once CE is met. The Department sends a courtesy reminder around 30 days out, to your address on file — keeping that current is your responsibility.
Producer renewal is $150, limited line $75, adjusters $50, plus a $20 surcharge for renewing by post. Miss the deadline and you have a 30-day grace period; beyond that you can renew within a year of lapse with a penalty.
Credits must be reported within 30 days. Keep certificates for at least five years.
Long-Term Care and Flood
- Long-term care: a one-time 8-hour NAIC-approved course, then 4 hours each renewal period. These hours do count toward your CE total.
- Flood: a one-time 3-hour NFIP course, which should be completed in the first renewal period following licence issuance.
