Virginia Life & Health Insurance Continuing Education
Virginia Bureau of Insurance approved online continuing education for life, annuities and health licensees. Approved provider ID# 136325, with completions reported to the state at no additional cost.
Virginia CE Requirements — 16 or 24 Hours?
- One licence type: 16 hours, including 3 hours of ethics.
- Two or more licence types: 24 hours, including 3 hours of ethics, with a minimum of 8 hours specific to each licence type held.
- Important: Life, Annuities and Health count as a single licence for CE purposes. Holding all three still means 16 hours, not 24. It is holding, say, Life and Health plus Property and Casualty that takes you to 24.
Virginia laws and regulations courses may be used to satisfy the ethics requirement. Excess ethics credits may be applied to your other CE requirements in the same biennium.
The 75% Agency Rule
No more than 75% of your required credits may come from courses provided by insurance agencies or insurance companies — any of them, not just ones you are associated with. Independent providers are unaffected by this cap.
Long-Term Care — Miss the Refresher and You Repeat the Whole Course
The initial LTC requirement is an 8-hour course including 2 hours of Virginia-specific Partnership content. Then 4 hours every 24 months thereafter. Fail to complete the ongoing 4 hours within 24 months of the initial course and Virginia forfeits recognition of the initial 8-hour course entirely — you have to take it again from scratch.
Non-residents who completed the initial NAIC LTC course elsewhere must still complete 2 hours of Virginia LTC Partnership content.
Annuity Training
Agents licensed on or after 1 September 2021 must complete a one-time 4-hour best interest course before selling annuities. Those licensed before that date who had completed the older 4-hour training were required to add a one-hour best interest top-up by 1 March 2022.
Renewal and Failure
Licences run two years, expiring at the end of your birth month in odd or even years according to your birth year. Fail to complete CE on time and the licence is terminated — Virginia has no suspension period or grace window. Carry-over of excess credits is only possible if you renewed within the 90-day renewal period.
Exams
Closed-book, 70% to pass, unlimited retakes. Virginia no longer requires a proctor, which makes it more straightforward than Pennsylvania, Georgia or Michigan.
Reporting Fee
Virginia charges $2.60 per CE hour for reporting — $20.80 on an 8-hour course, $7.80 on a 3-hour one. The provider includes this in the course price rather than adding it at checkout.
