Mental Health First Aid for People Who Manage Others

The NUCO Level 3 Award in First Aid for Mental Health (Supervising) is a two-day regulated qualification for managers, supervisors and wellbeing leads who are often the first to be told when someone is struggling. It includes the Level 1 and Level 2 content in the NUCO First Aid for Mental Health suite, then goes further into the supervisory side: what the organisation is expected to do, and what you personally can and cannot take on.

The course covers a wide range of conditions, what early signs look like at work, and how to start a conversation with someone who may not want one. It deals honestly with difficult situations, such as being asked to keep something confidential, where your responsibility ends, and when to involve a professional. It also looks at the organisational causes of work-related stress and the HSE Management Standards, which is where a supervisor can often make a real difference.

Who Should Attend?

Managers, supervisors, team leaders, HR professionals and anyone appointed as a mental health first aider or wellbeing champion. There are no entry requirements and no previous first aid or mental health training is needed.

What to Expect on the Day

This is a discussion-based course with small groups. Some material can be difficult, but nobody is expected to share anything personal. Attendance on both consecutive days is needed for the certificate.

Is this a recognised qualification?

Yes. It is a Level 3 regulated award from NUCO Training.

How is it different from the Level 2?

Level 2 is for anyone who might be a first point of contact. Level 3 is for people with responsibility for others, adding the supervisory and organisational side to the Level 2 content.

Is it a legal requirement to have a mental health first aider?

No, but the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations require employers to assess risks to their people, and stress is a risk like any other. This course helps you act on that assessment.

How long is the certificate valid?

Three years.
