The Blue Card for Clean Water Site Access

EUSR National Water Hygiene, known on site as the Blue Card, is the registration UK water companies require before anyone carries out restricted operations within the clean water network or enters a clean water site. Drinking water is easy to contaminate and difficult to put right, so the hygiene controls are strict and every worker near a clean water asset is expected to understand them.

The requirement applies well beyond water company employees. Contractors, subcontractors, Self-Lay Organisation operatives and anyone working on or around potable water systems, including service reservoirs, treatment works, pumping stations, boreholes, water mains and service pipes, need a current registration. This session is delivered live online by a tutor.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone carrying out restricted operations within the clean water network or entering clean water sites, including water company employees, contractors and subcontractors, Self-Lay Organisation operatives, and groundworkers or plant operators working on potable water assets. There are no entry requirements.

Water, Disease and Contamination

• The importance of clean water and the duty behind it
• Water as a carrier of disease
• How contamination occurs on clean water sites
• The consequences of contamination for consumers, employers and water providers

Prevention and Safe Working

• Practical controls and behaviours that prevent contamination
• Personal hygiene responsibilities and fitness to work
• The health screening process and why it exists
• Working safely around water infrastructure, tools, fittings and materials

Methods of Assessment

A multiple choice paper at the end of the session, completed together with a health screening questionnaire. A pass is registered with EUSR and is valid for three years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a restricted operation?

Work that could affect water quality, such as tasks on treatment works, service reservoirs, pumping stations, wells, springs, boreholes, water mains and service pipes.

How long is the Blue Card valid?

Three years. There is no separate refresher course, so the full course is retaken when the registration expires.

Is this the same as EUSR SHEA Water?

No. National Water Hygiene is about preventing contamination of the water supply, while SHEA Water is the safety, health and environmental awareness passport for the water utilities. Many water contracts expect both.
