The Benchmark UK Health and Safety Qualification, Taught Live Online
The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is the certificate-level qualification most UK employers mean when they ask for someone who is NEBOSH qualified. It is named in health and safety job adverts, used by procurement frameworks and insurers as a competence benchmark, and taken by people who want a career in health and safety.
This live online route is delivered by Acadame, a Gold NEBOSH Learning Partner, with a tutor teaching in real time over two weeks. Every candidate has a named Individual Learning Advisor and access to an eLearning portal for revision and assessment preparation between sessions. There are no entry requirements and no previous health and safety qualifications are needed.

A reasonable standard of written English is recommended, and you will need access to a real workplace for the GNC2 risk assessment.
Course Content
Unit GNC1: Management of Health and Safety
- Why workplace health and safety should be managed: the moral, legal and financial case
- The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- How health and safety management systems work and what a good one looks like
- Managing risk through people and processes, including human factors and safe systems of work
- Common physical, chemical, biological and psychosocial hazards and their controls
- Investigating incidents to find the cause rather than the culprit
- Monitoring and measuring performance, including leading indicators
Unit GNC2: Risk Assessment
- A practical risk assessment carried out in a real workplace
- Identifying hazards and judging likelihood
- Choosing and justifying control measures
- Producing a workable action plan
Methods of Assessment
The method of assessment is a three-step journey:
Step 1. GNC1 Open Book Examination
A scenario-based open book assessment completed over a set period, testing how you apply knowledge to a realistic workplace situation.
Step 2. Closing Interview
A short interview after the open book assessment to confirm the work is your own and discuss your submission.
Step 3. GNC2 Practical Risk Assessment
A risk assessment and action plan carried out in a real workplace and submitted to NEBOSH for external marking. Results across both units are graded Pass, Credit or Distinction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I take the National or International General Certificate?
Both sit at the same level and employers treat them as equivalent. The National is built on UK law and suits people working in Great Britain. The International is built on international standards and ILO conventions for work outside Great Britain.
Do I need access to a workplace?
Yes, for the GNC2 practical risk assessment. If that is difficult for you, raise it when you book so an alternative can be arranged in good time.
Does the NEBOSH General Certificate expire?
No. It has no expiry date, although continuing professional development is recommended to keep your knowledge current.
What happens if I do not pass a unit?
You only resit the unit you did not pass, rather than the whole qualification.
