BOHS Asbestos Qualifications, Legionella and Hazardous Substances E-Learning

NATAS covers the technical end of hazardous substances — including BOHS P402 and P405, the professional asbestos qualifications held by surveyors and analysts rather than site operatives. Around them sits a broad e-learning range covering legionella, silica dust, COSHH and confined space awareness, most of it aimed at duty holders rather than the workforce.

BOHS professional asbestos qualifications
BOHS P402 Surveying & Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings, and P405 Management of Asbestos in Buildings including removal — both delivered live online. These are the qualifications held by asbestos surveyors and consultants, and they sit well above awareness level. P402 in particular is what a survey report should be underpinned by. Asbestos awareness and duty to manage
NATAS Asbestos Awareness for anyone whose work might disturb it, Duty to Manage Asbestos for those holding the Regulation 4 duty over premises, and the Non-Licensed Asbestos Works Refresher — required annually for operatives carrying out Category B work.
Legionella
Legionella & Legionnaires Disease Awareness, and Legionella Management for Duty Holders. ACOP L8 places a duty on anyone responsible for premises to assess and control legionella risk in water systems — a duty frequently overlooked in buildings with low occupancy or seasonal use, where stagnation is exactly the problem.
Hazardous substances and dust
Silica Dust Awareness — respirable crystalline silica causes silicosis and lung cancer, and cutting or grinding concrete, stone and brick releases it. Plus COSHH, Risk Assessment, Abrasive Wheels and Confined Space Awareness.
P402 or awareness — which do I need?
They serve entirely different people. Awareness is for tradespeople who might encounter asbestos and need to recognise it and stop. P402 is a professional surveying qualification for those producing management and refurbishment surveys — it involves sampling strategy, building inspection and report writing. If you are commissioning a survey, P402 is what you should expect the surveyor to hold.
