California Life & Health Insurance Continuing Education

California Department of Insurance approved online continuing education for life-only, accident and health licensees. All courses are CDI-approved (Provider # 333649), reported to the state on your behalf, and completed at your own pace with no hidden fees.

California CE Requirements

• Producers, agents and broker-agents: 24 hours of CE in your class of insurance every two-year term, including 3 hours of ethics.
• Limited lines automobile agents: 20 hours plus 3 hours of ethics.
• Multiple lines: if you hold more than one line, the 24 hours may be taken in courses applicable to any of them. There is no breadth requirement.
• Carry-over: excess hours do carry into the next term, but ethics, annuity and long-term care hours carry only as general credit — those specific requirements must be met again.
• Exam: 70% to pass, closed-book, unlimited retakes.

New Requirements from January 2025

• Variable life: agents selling variable life insurance policies must complete 2 hours of topic-specific CE before each renewal.
• Newly licensed life agents: anyone licensed on or after 1 January 2024 must complete 4 hours of life insurance CE before soliciting customers for specified life policies.

Both apply to resident and non-resident licensees.

Annuity and Long-Term Care Training

• Annuities: a one-time 8-hour annuity training course before soliciting annuity sales, then 4 hours of annuity CE each term. Required even if you are otherwise exempt from CE.
• Long-term care: an initial 8-hour LTC course, then 8 hours annually for the first four years, and 8 hours per two-year term from the fifth year onward. Also required even if otherwise exempt.

Renewal, Deadlines and Exemptions

Licences run two years and CDI emails a renewal notice 90 days before expiry. Late renewal carries a 50% late fee, and if a full year passes after lapse you must reapply as a new applicant. Keep your completion certificate for five years in case of audit — the provider reports your hours, but the record is your responsibility.

You are exempt from general CE if you are 70 or over, or have been a licensee in good standing for 30 continuous years. Non-residents meeting their home state's requirements are also exempt. Annuity and LTC requirements still apply regardless.

Reporting Fee

California charges a reporting fee of 65 cents per credit hour — $15.60 on a 24-hour package, $1.95 on a 3-hour course. The provider includes this in the course price rather than adding it at checkout.
