EUSR Cat 1 Locate Utility Services (CAT & Genny) in Farnham, Surrey

This one-day EUSR-accredited course covers the safe location of buried utility services using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny). It is intended for anyone who excavates or breaks ground, including groundworkers, streetworks operatives, utility teams, engineers and supervisors responsible for planning excavation work.

Category 1: Locate Utility Services (HSG47) sets the minimum training and assessment required for those working to safely detect utility services using recognised and approved detection methods. Learners cover the principles of cable avoidance, correct use of the equipment in each detection mode, how to interpret and verify signals, and how to work from utility plans before breaking ground.

If you need cable avoidance training but not the EUSR registration, a shorter HSG47-compliant CAT and Genny course covers the same equipment without the scheme registration.

About the Scheme

The categories within this scheme were developed in collaboration with employers and stakeholders from across the energy and utility sector. Training and assessment against each category gains an individual a registration on EUSR, and is delivered by providers through their Energy & Utility Skills approved programme.

Delivery Method

Delivered in the classroom with practical equipment sessions at the training centre in Farnham, Surrey, GU10 5DD. This course can also be run in-house at your own premises.

Course Criteria

• No formal entry requirements, though a working knowledge of excavation activity is helpful.
• Delegates should have a sufficient standard of English to complete the assessment.

Course Content

• Types of underground utility service and the risks of striking them
• HSG47 and relevant health and safety legislation
• Planning excavation work and using utility drawings
• Principles of cable avoidance and detection
• CAT operation in power, radio and generator modes
• Correct use of the Signal Generator
• Scanning technique and locating a service accurately
• Interpreting signals and recognising false readings
• Marking up and safe digging practice
• Pre-use equipment checks and calibration awareness
• Permit-to-dig systems and safe systems of work
• What to do in the event of a service strike

Certification

Successful delegates gain a registration on EUSR for Category 1: Locate Utility Services. Registration is valid for three years from successful completion of training and assessment on an Energy & Utility Skills approved programme, after which reassessment is required.
