Florida Life & Health Insurance Continuing Education

Florida Department of Financial Services approved online continuing education for life, health and annuity licensees. All courses are DFS-approved (Provider ID# 370074), reported to the state on your behalf, and completed at your own pace with a printable certificate.

How Many Hours Do You Need?

Florida is unusual — your requirement depends on how long you have held the licence.

• Licensed under 6 years: 24 hours, made up of 20 elective hours plus the 4-hour Law and Ethics Update.
• Licensed 6 years or more: 20 hours, made up of 16 elective hours plus the 4-hour Law and Ethics Update.
• Customer representatives and similar limited licences: 10 hours including the Law and Ethics Update.

Check your position on the MyProfile portal before buying — the 20-hour and 16-hour elective courses are not interchangeable.

The Law and Ethics Update Is Licence-Specific

Every licensee must take a 4-hour Law and Ethics Update, but the correct version depends on your licence type. Life (2-16, 2-14) takes the 5-214 version, Health (2-40) takes 5-240, Life and Health (2-15, 2-18) takes 5-215. Taking the wrong one will not satisfy the requirement.

Deadlines, Carry-Over and Repeats

CE is due every two years by the last day of your birth month. If you have not held the licence for 24 months when the first expiry falls, the initial deadline extends by a year. Miss it by 45 days and DFS issues a Preliminary Notice of Noncompliance and a Settlement Stipulation.

Up to 24 excess hours carry into the next term. You cannot repeat the same course within two years of the original completion date — the provider maintains alternate versions of its courses for this reason. Exams are closed-book, 70% to pass, with unlimited retakes. Keep your certificate for two years.

Annuity and Long-Term Care Training

• Annuities: since 1 January 2024, producers selling annuities must complete a 4-hour annuity best interest course before selling annuity products.
• Long-term care: licensed health agents handling LTC partnership products need an initial 8-hour course, then 4 further hours of LTC CE each licensing term.

Exemptions and Reductions

Licensed in Florida for 25 years or more may qualify for a reduction in hours. Holders of a Risk Management Insurance degree, or the CPCU or CLU designation, may be able to complete only 10 hours per term including the Law and Ethics Update. Both require an application.
