Georgia CE Requirements — Hours Depend on Experience
- Licensed under 20 years: 24 hours every two years, including 3 hours of ethics.
- Licensed 20 years or more: 20 hours every two years, including 3 hours of ethics.
- Professional designations: holders of CPCU, CLU, FLMI, CIC, CEBS, ChFC, AAI, CFP, CRM or CISR, or a BBA in Risk Management and Insurance from an accredited college, need only 12 hours including 3 of ethics. Proof of designation must be submitted.
- Universal Claims Certification holders are exempt from CE entirely, as are agents holding a current non-active licence.
CE may be completed in any area for which you are licensed — Georgia is not line-restrictive.
A 12-Hour Daily Cap
Georgia limits students to no more than 12 hours of continuing education per day. That is why the courses below are built as 12-hour blocks rather than a single 24-hour package: two 12-hour courses on separate days is the practical route to a full renewal. Leaving it to the last day will not work.
Carry-Over and Repeats
Excess hours carry into the next period, but no more than 50% of the next period's requirement may be met that way. Excess ethics hours carry as general credit only, so the 3-hour ethics requirement must be met afresh each term. A course cannot be repeated for credit within a licensing period, though it may be retaken after renewal for the following one.
Exams Must Be Proctored
All Georgia CE exams are closed-book and require an impartial proctor to be present — not a family member and not anyone with a financial interest in the outcome. Pass mark is 70%, with unlimited retakes. This is stricter than most states and worth arranging before you start.
Missing the Deadline Gets Expensive Quickly
Licences expire on the last day of your birth month every other year. Late renewal is possible within 15 days for a fee. Beyond that you need late renewal reinstatement plus a $150 penalty. Six months or more after expiry you must also submit electronic fingerprints; more than a year after, you reapply for the licence from scratch.
Annuity and Long-Term Care
- Annuities: a one-time 4-hour Annuity Suitability course before selling, soliciting or negotiating annuity products. A similar course completed in another state satisfies this.
- Long-term care: an initial 8-hour course, then 4 hours every licensing period. If you have taken another state's LTC partnership course, up to 6 of the initial 8 hours may be credited, but you must still complete a 2-hour Georgia-specific Medicaid course.
