IPAF MEWP Operator Training for Scissor Lifts and Mobile Booms
This one-day IPAF course trains delegates to prepare and safely operate two categories of Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) and leads to an IPAF MEWP Operator Licence (PAL card) covering both. Category 3a covers mobile vertical platforms such as scissor lifts, and category 3b covers mobile booms such as self-propelled cherry pickers, which can be driven while the platform is raised.

Who Is This Course For?
First-time applicants and operators renewing their IPAF card who need to use scissor lifts and mobile boom machines on site.
Course Content
- Pre-use inspection and function checks of the MEWP
- Safe set-up and positioning of scissor lifts (3a) and mobile booms (3b)
- Operating the platform and travelling safely
- Hazards when working from a MEWP and how to control them
- Theory and practical assessment
Certification
Successful delegates receive an IPAF Powered Access Licence (PAL card) for categories 3a and 3b, valid for 5 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between IPAF 3a and 3b?
Category 3a covers mobile vertical platforms such as scissor lifts. Category 3b covers mobile boom platforms, such as self-propelled cherry pickers. This course covers both on one licence.
How long is an IPAF licence valid?
The IPAF PAL card is valid for 5 years.
Is an IPAF licence a legal requirement?
There is no specific law requiring an IPAF licence, but the Work at Height Regulations require anyone operating at height to be competent, and IPAF is the most widely recognised standard. Most sites ask for it.
