4-Hour Live Online Refresher for Existing MHFAiders®

Course Overview

This 4-hour refresher gives existing Mental Health First Aiders the chance to renew their skills and update their knowledge of how to support someone experiencing a mental health issue. Completing the refresher also gives a further 3 years of access to MHFAider® support and benefits from MHFA England.

The training is delivered by an experienced and qualified MHFA England instructor, using a combination of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities.

Who needs the Mental Health First Aid Refresher?

The refresher is only open to people who have previously completed a Mental Health First Aid course.

Why is Mental Health First Aid Refresher training important?

In the same way that physical first aid qualifications are refreshed, Mental Health First Aid skills should be kept up to date. Refreshing allows MHFAiders® to carry on in their role confidently and safely, and shows an organisation’s commitment to treating mental health on a par with physical health.

Learning Outcomes

As an MHFAider® you will be able to:

• Recognise those who may be experiencing poor mental health and provide them with first-level support and early intervention

• Practise active listening and empathy
• Have a conversation with improved mental health literacy around language and stigma
• Discuss the MHFAider® role in depth, including boundaries and confidentiality
• Practise self-care
• Use the MHFAider Support App®
• Access a dedicated text service provided by Shout and ongoing learning opportunities with MHFA England

Validity of Award

This certificate does not expire; however, refresher training is recommended every 3 years to keep access to MHFA England online resources, including the MHFAider Support App®.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should Mental Health First Aiders refresh?
MHFA England recommends refresher training every 3 years. The certificate itself does not expire, but refreshing keeps your access to MHFAider® support and resources.

Can I attend if I haven't done Mental Health First Aid before?
No. The refresher is only for people who have already completed a Mental Health First Aid course. New learners should book the full 2-day Mental Health First Aid course.

Is there an exam?
No. There is no formal assessment on the refresher course.
