Who the Level 2 Roofing NVQ (Roof Slater and Tiler) is for

Many roofers move between slated and tiled roofs from one job to the next. This combined pathway is for them: experienced roofers who want both skills recognised in a single qualification and need the blue CSCS Skilled Worker card.

What the slater and tiler NVQ covers

Delivery Method

NVQ, assessed in your workplace by a qualified assessor, with support given remotely or face to face. There is no classroom attendance.

Course Duration

Flexible. Move quickly if your evidence is in place, or take the time you need.

Course Content

The pathway covers both trades: setting out and fixing slates, laying plain and interlocking tiles, and forming the ridges, hips, valleys and abutments that go with each. Mandatory units on health, safety and welfare and productive working practices are also included.

Assessment

• No written test or exam
• Professional discussion with your assessor
• Observation on site, or through video and photo evidence
• Evidence from your everyday work, such as RAMS, job logs and site diaries
• Witness statements from supervisors or colleagues

Certification

ProQual Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Roofing Occupations (Construction), qualification number 601/7792/5, a nationally recognised qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework.

Prerequisites

No formal qualifications are needed to start, but you must already be working on both slated and tiled roofs so your assessor can gather evidence from real jobs.

Is there an exam for the slater and tiler NVQ?

No. You are assessed on evidence from your slating and tiling work, a professional discussion and observation on site or through photos and video.

How long does it take?

There is no fixed length. If your evidence is ready you can fast-track; otherwise you can complete it around your work.

Which CSCS card does it lead to?

Completing the qualification lets you apply for the blue CSCS Skilled Worker card.

Do I need experience of both slating and tiling?

Yes. This pathway assesses both trades, so you need to be working on slated and tiled roofs. If you only do one, the separate Roof Slater or Roof Tiler pathway is a better fit.
