Who the Level 4 NVQ Site Supervision (Tunnelling) is for

This Level 4 NVQ is for people who already supervise work on construction sites and want that experience formally recognised. Typical learners are site supervisors, senior supervisors, assistant site managers, construction coordinators and working forepersons who have taken on wider site responsibilities. It also suits supervisors who are preparing to move up into site management.

The Tunnelling pathway is for supervisors on tunnelling and other underground projects, overseeing the teams and operations below ground.

What the Level 4 NVQ Site Supervision (Tunnelling) involves

Delivery Method

NVQ – assessed in the workplace. There are no classroom sessions, no day release and no written exams. You upload evidence to an electronic portfolio from site, home or the office, and a qualified assessor supports you remotely, face to face or through a mix of both.

Course Duration

Many learners finish in 4–8 weeks, depending on their experience, availability and the evidence they can provide. You can work at your own pace, and a fast-track option is available.

Course Content

The qualification focuses on the supervisory and leadership side of site work: coordinating subcontractors, overseeing health and safety, checking work against quality standards and keeping day-to-day site operations running. Your assessor confirms the unit combination with you at induction.

Assessment

  • An induction to review your current experience and plan your portfolio
  • Evidence from your normal work, such as RAMS, toolbox talks, site diaries, progress reports, quality inspections and health and safety records
  • Professional discussion with your assessor
  • Workplace observation, photos and video
  • Witness testimonies from managers, colleagues or subcontractors

Certification

Awarded by ProQual (qualification number 610/0231/8) – a nationally recognised Level 4 NVQ Diploma.

Benefits

  • Formal recognition of the supervisory skills you already use
  • Keep working and earning while you qualify
  • A recognised route to the Gold Supervisor CSCS card, with help applying once you are certified
  • Help with a temporary red CSCS card while you complete, if you need one
  • A step towards the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management
  • The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test is included in the package
  • A free place on a GEM Compliance Training public course, worth up to £279 + VAT

Prerequisites

No formal qualifications are needed, but you must already hold supervisory responsibilities on tunnelling work so that your work can be assessed. An induction at enrolment checks your experience and identifies what you can already evidence.
