Training Courses in Sheffield
Sheffield is the main centre for classroom training in South Yorkshire. Open courses run here across the full CITB Site Safety Plus range, from SMSTS and SSSTS to temporary works, alongside one of the widest choices of NEBOSH qualifications outside the big regional capitals, IOSH courses, workplace first aid and PASMA towers. This page lists the scheduled courses in Sheffield from approved training providers, so you can compare dates, venues and prices in one place and book the one that suits.

SMSTS, SSSTS and CITB courses in Sheffield
The CITB Site Safety Plus range is the largest group of courses running in Sheffield, with a choice of venues for most of them. The five-day SMSTS is for site managers and is offered both as a single block week and as day release, one day a week over five weeks, which suits managers who cannot leave a live site for a full week. The two-day SSSTS is for first-line supervisors, gangers and foremen, and runs on weekdays with some weekend courses as well.
Both certificates last five years and must be renewed before they expire: the SMSTS Refresher takes two days and the SSSTS Refresher one. If the certificate lapses, CITB requires the full course again. The one-day Health and Safety Awareness course is the usual route towards the CSCS Labourer card, alongside the CITB health, safety and environment test.
Sheffield is also well served for temporary works. The two-day Temporary Works Coordinator course is for the person who manages the temporary works process on a project, and the one-day Temporary Works Supervisor course, which also runs at weekends, is for those who oversee the work day to day. Coordinators can renew with the one-day Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher.
Also running in Sheffield: SEATS site environmental awareness, a one-day course for supervisors. For the national picture see SMSTS courses, SSSTS courses and all CITB courses.
First aid courses in Sheffield
Sheffield has first aid courses from several providers, so there is a real choice of venue. The one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course suits lower-risk workplaces such as offices and shops. The three-day First Aid at Work course is for higher-risk settings and larger sites, including construction, manufacturing, engineering and warehousing.
Both certificates last three years. First Aid at Work holders renew with the two-day Requalification course; Emergency First Aid at Work holders simply repeat the one-day course. Nurseries, childminders and schools need Paediatric First Aid, the two-day course that meets the Early Years Foundation Stage requirement.

NEBOSH courses in Sheffield
Sheffield is a strong city for NEBOSH, with more of the range taught in the classroom here than in most places. The NEBOSH General Certificate is the usual starting point for anyone moving into a health and safety role. It is offered either as two block weeks or as day release, one day a week, and leads to the NG1 open-book examination and the NG2 workplace risk assessment.
For site-based roles, the NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction certificate also runs as block or day release. The Environmental Management Certificate and the Certificate in Fire Safety are taught here too, and the NEBOSH Diploma is available in Sheffield for practitioners working towards chartered status.
For a shorter commitment, the one-day NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation course is aimed at managers and supervisors who investigate accidents and near misses.
Compare every format, including live online and e-learning, under NEBOSH courses.
IOSH courses in Sheffield
IOSH Managing Safely runs in Sheffield as a three-day classroom course, either on consecutive days or as day release over three weeks. It is aimed at managers and supervisors in any sector who are responsible for other people's safety, and is assessed by a short test and a workplace risk assessment project.
The one-day IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors course covers the legal and strategic responsibilities that sit with senior leaders, and the one-day IOSH Working Safely course gives staff at every level a grounding in everyday hazards and their own responsibilities.
See every format under IOSH courses.
PASMA and IPAF training in Sheffield
PASMA Towers for Users is the one-day course for anyone who assembles, moves or dismantles mobile aluminium towers. The Combined Low-Level Access and Towers for Users course adds podiums and folding towers in the same day. PASMA cards last five years.
For powered access, the IPAF 1b, 3a and 3b operator course covers static booms, scissor lifts and mobile booms, and is listed for Sheffield with dates on request. IPAF harness training, for anyone who wears a harness in a boom, is also based here, as is novice counterbalance forklift training.

Where the courses run in Sheffield
Training venues in Sheffield are mostly purpose-built training centres and are not all in the city centre. At present there are venues on the north-east and east side of the city, which is the side closest to the M1, on the south and south-west side, and beyond the edge of the city to the south-east and north-east. The venues on the M1 side are practical for delegates driving in from Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster and north Derbyshire, and parking is usually straightforward. The exact venue and postcode are shown on every course listing, with a map, so check it before you book, particularly if you are travelling by tram or train.

Renewing a ticket? Check the date first
SMSTS, SSSTS and PASMA all run on five-year cycles and first aid on three, and CITB refreshers can only be taken while the original certificate is still in date. Sheffield refresher courses fill quickest in the weeks before popular expiry dates, so check your expiry date and book a month or two ahead.
Common questions about training in Sheffield
Should I book SMSTS or SSSTS?
It depends on your role, not your trade. SMSTS is for people who manage a site: planning, organising and controlling the work, including site managers, contracts managers and agents. SSSTS is for those who supervise a gang or a section of the work day to day. Most principal contractors ask for SMSTS from anyone running a site and SSSTS from every supervisor. Compare SMSTS and SSSTS dates in South Yorkshire.
My SMSTS or SSSTS is about to expire. Can I still take the refresher?
Yes, provided you complete the refresher before the expiry date on your certificate. CITB does not allow a grace period: once the certificate has lapsed you need to retake the full five-day SMSTS or two-day SSSTS. If Sheffield refresher dates are too late, check the rest of South Yorkshire before the date passes.
Block course or day release: which is better?
The content, assessment and certificate are identical. A block course gets it done quickly, five days for SMSTS or two weeks for the NEBOSH General Certificate, but takes you out of work completely. Day release spreads the same tuition over one day a week, which is easier to cover on a live site and gives you time between sessions to absorb the material. In Sheffield both patterns are available for SMSTS, IOSH Managing Safely and the main NEBOSH certificates, so choose on what your workload allows.
Do I need one-day or three-day first aid?
That comes from your first aid needs assessment. Low-risk workplaces with small numbers usually need Emergency First Aid at Work, the one-day course. Higher-risk work, larger headcounts, shift patterns and remote sites point towards the three-day First Aid at Work course. Our first aid needs calculator gives a starting answer in a couple of minutes.
Are the courses in Sheffield city centre?
Mostly not. The majority run at training centres on the edges of the city and just beyond it, where there is space for practical work and parking is easier. The venue postcode and a map are on each course listing, and they differ from course to course even within the same scheme, so check the location before you book rather than assuming it is central.
Can you run a course at our premises in Sheffield?
Yes. Most of the courses on this page can be delivered on site for a group, on dates you choose. It usually becomes cheaper than open-course places at around six to eight delegates, and the trainer can refer to your own site, plant and procedures. Send the details through the on-site training page for a quote.
