What is the CITB Directors' Role for Health and Safety Course?
The Directors' Role for Health and Safety (DRHS) course is the one-day CITB Site Safety Plus programme for company directors, board members and strategic decision-makers in construction. Recognised by Build UK, it examines the legal, moral and operational responsibilities directors carry under health and safety law and gives delegates practical tools to lead a proactive safety culture from the top of the organisation.
Who is the DRHS Course Suitable For?
Company and operations directors, senior and principal engineers, project managers, principal designers, contracts managers, non-executive directors and company secretaries – anyone who shapes strategy, policy and culture through executive decisions. Delegates should hold a director-level or strategic role, have an awareness of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, CDM 2015 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and complete the pre-course eLearning module. Photo ID and National Insurance number are needed on the day.
What's Included in the DRHS Course?
One day of live instructor-led training with interactive workshops, group discussion and scenario-based exercises, plus the CITB mandatory publication Construction site safety – Book A: Legal and management (GE700A) and HSE guidance HSG65, INDG275 and INDG417.
Delivery Method
Live online. Delegates need a laptop or PC with webcam, microphone and speakers, a stable connection and a quiet space for the day.

- Legal duties and responsibilities of directors under health and safety legislation
- Developing and promoting a health and safety culture
- Leadership, governance and accountability in health and safety management
- Board-level risk management and decision-making
- Identifying and empowering competent duty-holders and effective delegation
- Applying the Plan-Do-Check-Act model to embed continuous improvement
- Case studies, scenarios and practical exercises
Assessment / Examination
A personal review, participation in group work and a 30-question exam (multiple choice and short answer) with an 80% pass mark. Unsuccessful delegates may retake the exam once on the same or a later course.
Certification
Successful delegates receive the CITB Site Safety Plus Directors' certificate as a PDF, valid for five years.
