What is the CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course?

The Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course is the one-day CITB Site Safety Plus programme that gives construction workers a clear understanding of their health and safety responsibilities on site. Delivered live over Zoom, it mirrors the classroom version, highlights the hazards workers are likely to meet and explains what is expected of them, what their employer must provide and what to do when something is wrong. It is a recognised route to the CSCS Green Labourer card and Build UK endorses the course.

Who is the HSA Course Suitable For?

People new to construction or civil engineering, labourers applying for a CSCS Green card, and anyone who wants to refresh their site safety knowledge. A good standard of English and a valid form of photo ID are required.

What's Included in the HSA Course?

One day of live instructor-led training over Zoom, with the CITB mandatory publication Construction health and safety awareness (GE707) supplied as an eBook, plus HSE guidance HSG65, INDG275 and INDG417.

Delivery Method

Live online via Zoom, 08:30 to 16:30. Delegates need a laptop or PC with webcam, microphone and speakers, a stable connection and a quiet space for the day.

Course Content

• General responsibilities of workers, health and welfare on site
• Accident prevention and reporting, emergency procedures and first aid
• Work at height, manual handling and the use of PPE
• Handheld equipment and tools, site transport safety
• Noise and vibration, hazardous substances and electrical safety
• Reading and following risk assessments and method statements, identifying and reporting unsafe acts

Assessment / Examination

A 25-question exam delivered through Microsoft Forms at the end of the day – no special software is needed.

Certification

Successful delegates receive the CITB Site Safety Plus HSA certificate as a PDF, valid for five years. Holders can then apply to CSCS for the Green Labourer card alongside the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test.

After completing the course, learners can order their certificate directly from the provider.

To join online courses, delegates have to log in via a link provided through a computer or laptop with a camera, screen, microphone and access to the internet.

Short online courses also help employers to demonstrate that they have fulfilled their legal duties to ensure their personnel have been adequately trained.

Once the courses have been completed, a confirmation of results can be saved or printed as evidence. This can then be kept on record as evidence of suitable training.
