What is the CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course?

The one-day CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course is the operative-level course in the Site Safety Plus scheme (Site Safety Plus Level 1). It gives delegates a practical summary of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues on site: how to identify their own responsibilities for looking after themselves and others, what their employer's duties are, and what to do if anyone's health and safety is at risk.

Who is the Health and Safety Awareness Course Suitable For?

People who are considering, or have just started, working in the construction and civil engineering industries. Delegates must be competent in English at operative level.

What's Included in the Health and Safety Awareness Course?

A day of interactive training from the provider's in-house instructor, using case studies, classroom discussion and group work, followed by the CITB examination.

Delivery Method

Classroom, starting at 8.30am, at the provider's training centre at Kingsley Place, Mote Road, Maidstone, Kent.

Course Content

Delegates learn about the hazards they can face on construction sites, how to prevent accidents, health and safety law, risk assessments and method statements, and the importance of reporting unsafe acts. Topics include:

• General health and safety responsibilities
• Health and welfare
• Work at height
• Manual handling
• Personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Handheld equipment and tools
• Site transport safety
• Accident prevention and reporting
• Noise and vibration
• Hazardous substances
• Electrical safety
• Emergency procedures and first aid
• Environmental awareness, pollution and waste management
• Fire prevention and control
• Confined spaces

Assessment / Examination

A 30-minute multiple-choice paper at the end of the course.

Certification

Successful delegates receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, valid for five years and renewed by retaking the course. With the certificate, delegates can apply for the CSCS Labourer card. The natural next step for those moving into supervision is the two-day SSSTS course.
